The artist film programme FUTURE ECOLOGIES in the Western Balkans is presented through a programme of exhibitions, screenings and public events, curated by six curators from the region. The exhibition in Montenegro is curated by Natalija Vujošević in partnership with The Film Center of Montenegro and titled: FUTURE IN DEBRIS.

FUTURE IN DEBRIS

The interdisciplinary program FUTURE IN DEBRIS takes place exactly thirty years after the proclamation of Montenegro as an ecological state. In those thirty years, we were faced with the onslaught of wild neoliberalism, the consequences of which are reflected through the urban and natural landscape. While ideas of unity are collapsing along with neglected masterpieces of socialist architecture, Montenegro's natural beauty is being reduced to consumer goods repackaged to attract investors' capital.

In such circumstances, how do we imagine the future of a society?

FUTURE IN DEBRIS brings together artists who, through various approaches, from poetry to politics, scientific research to speculative practices, use the language of archives and the language of landscapes to observe and record processes in an environment that is slowly sliding into dystopia. The need to rethink the community and to take united action to find the ecologies of the future are the burning topics that the FUTURE IN DEBRIS deals with.

The exhibition will be opened on 4 May and will last until 28 May, in the premises of the "Petrović Njegoš" Foundation. The audience will have the opportunity to see the works of the following artists: Adrijana Gvozdenović, Louis Henderson, Lenka Đorojević & Matej Stupica, Ivan Marković, Uriel Orlow, Irena Lagator Pejović, Charlotte Prodger, Ben Rivers, Ivan Salatić and Jelena Tomašević.

The forum for spatial action, which will be realized every Thursday online, via the Zoom platform, is conceived by KANA (Who If Not the Architect), and will host Biljana Gligorić, Cvijeta Biščević, Balša Lubarda, Ljubo Slavković, Aleksandar Perović, Louis Henderson, Ben Cook and other.

WE ARE HERE: Artists' Moving Image

WE ARE HERE: Artists' Moving Image from the British Council Collection and LUX is a series of five artists’ film programmes of compilations and installations curated by Tendai John Mutambu for the British Council, and LUX, an international arts agency that supports and promotes artists’ moving image practices.

Each programme is curated around a theme: national identity, marginality, intimacy, the future and the archive. WE ARE HERE interrogates how outstanding emerging and established British or UK-based contemporary artists are influenced by these themes and how they explore them through biography, documentary, poetry and fiction.

FUTURE IN DEBRIS, curated by Natalija Vujosevic in partnership with The Film Center of Montenegro, is realised in cooperation with the "Petrović Njegoš" Foundation and the Institute for Contemporary Art (NVU).
